Liberal Democrats Condemn Southern Rail Fiasco As Hundreds of Services Are Cut

July 14, 2016 5:45 PM

Southern trainSouthern Rail have axed all services on the Milton Keynes to Clapham Junction route, which serves Berkhamsted, Tring, Hemel Hempsted and Watford Junction. It is time for the Department of Transport to take responsibility for the ongoing fiasco that is the current Southern Rail service.

Thousands of rail users have been affected by this appalling operator. The reduced timetable and cuts are not a long-term solution. Commuters are taking hours to travel a short distance and businesses in our area are suffering as staff are unable to guarantee a timely arrival.

Moreover, with Gatwick airport being served by their lines, Southern Rail are jeapordising the vital tourism trade.

Enough is enough. It is time for the Government to intervene and stop this chaos.

Thousands of residents use the service to get to South and West London, connect at Clapham for Gatwick Airport or travel northbound to Hemel Hempstead and Milton Keynes.

Mayor Dorothy Thornhill has written to Southern Rail outlining the importance of the service for Watford residents and asking them to reconsider.

Nick Hollinghurst, Liberal Democrat County Councillor for Tring and the Villages said "At a time when the escalator works at Euston are already having a big impact on rail passengers, this route provided an alternative for commuters to the south and west of London. Cutting every single Southern train on this route will hit commuters hard. We need the service to be reinstated immediately."
