Near Miss on County for Lib Dems in Berkhamsted as Tory Vote Sags

July 14, 2017 10:55 PM

O Berkhamsted HCC Result 2017n Wednesday night Berkhamsted Liberal Democrats were celebrating a remarkable near miss in the recent County Council elections.

The campaign had been fought by the Liberal Democrats on two main issues.

The first was that the political representation was completely out of balance with opinion in the town.

The Tories held all 6 of the DBC seats in the town, 11 out of 15 seats on the Town Council, the County Council seat and also the seat in Parliament.

Worse than that there was a considerable overlap because several of their councillors held more than one seat. There are 6 town councillors in Berkhamsted whom are also members of the Tory group that runs Dacorum - and a seventh is the town's county councillor.

It's plain to see that Berkhamsted Town Council is in the pocket of the Dacorum Tories, who in turn are part of the Tory group that runs the County. Berkhamsted County Election History

So what the Tories decide in Dacorum today - they enforce in Berkhamsted tomorrow.

The first chart shows how local candidate, Nigel Taylor, came within 100 votes of winning the Berkhamsted Herts County Council Division for the Liberal Democrats on May 4th.

The second issue was their declaration of opposition to the Tory scheme for a multilevel car park right in the centre of the town near a notoriously congested crossroads. Set in the heart of the town where there is an almost continuous traffic jam, it will produce a wave of extra congestion twice a day as cars surge in and out every morning and evening.

In addition the Liberal democrats continued to take the green view - promoting electric motoring, public transport and a reduction in motor Nigel Taylorvehicle pollution.

The second chart shows how the Liberal Democrats have made progress over the years and how they decimated the Conservative's majority last month as their support sagged.

Clearly Berkhamsted voters are getting fed up with being taken for granted by the Tories.

Last year they relaced a Tory town councillor by Liberal Democrat Gordon Yearwood.

This year they came close to unseat the Tory who's sat in the town's county council seat for far too long!

Well done, candidate Nigel taylor
