As we know the minority Conservative Government is still continuing with its programme of harsh austerity.
However, there is still a trickle of infrastructure improvements reaching completion. These of course are for projects originally commissioned under the coalition Government by Liberal Democrat Transport and Environment Ministers.
Last month we reported on the replacement of a key 1.5 mile stretch of rail track at Halton in the North-West that will boost capacity for commuter services to Chester and Liverpool by a quarter of a million passenger journeys per year. Now we have noticed some more good news in the same area.
Nearly 2 miles of track under Liverpool and the River Mersey was replaced last June. This was part of a wider £340 million investment in Liverpool’s regional railways due to finish at the end of 2019.
The underground work was essential to enable a fleet of new trains to run on the Merseyrail system from 2020. The railway carries 37,000 people under the river everyday.
The Ferry across the Mersey is very pleasant when you’ve got plenty of time on a sunny day, but busy commuters will no doubt appreciate the new track and new trains!
